Darci Hether, an interior designer based in New York, recently lent her insight to Elle Décor by outlining her top design tips for transforming your bedroom into a space of serenity. As Hether says, “creating a soothing sleep space is an exercise in restraint,” from selecting muted tones and installing ambient lighting, to choosing comfortable bedding and eliminating distractions.
Controlling the lighting in your boudoir can make all the difference in the world, whether it’s using “typical Roman shade or drapery panel in blackout fabric” or using recessed lighting that is bright when you need it to be, and warm when it’s time to settle in. She recommends the “Philips Hue White Ambiance Starter Kit,” which works with your smartphone to create the perfect atmosphere.
Dark walls can help craft a sense of warmth in a bedroom.
When choosing a color palette, Hether says darkening your walls can provide “an overall cocoon-like warmth,” as with the navy blue in the bedroom pictured above. She adds that by using different textures rather than too many colors, you can “easily take the room from loud and cluttered to quiet and calm without going overly monotone.”
Liven up a space by adding fresh flowers or a plant.
Hether also recommends eliminating clutter from your bedroom and adding a hint of nature. Not only do plants breathe life into the space, “they’re an easy way to include a pop of color without permanently committing to a shade.” Finally, she recommends investing in a new mattress if needed and space permitting, adding a sitting area where you can snuggle up with a favorite book or remove your shoes at the end of the day.
